Hello there, you lovely human!
I’m back with another exciting edition of WST!
You can probably tell that I’m finally feeling better. Spring is here 🌱. There are cute little baby creatures (deer and tortoises 🦌🐢) grazing in my garden which I can see from my desk. It’s the most exciting quarter of the year. We just sold our first property (a vacant lot) for a profit. And today (3 Oct) is our 7-year wedding anniversary.
Things are looking up and I’m feeling eager for all the things that accompany the final part of the year (can ya believe it!?!)
That’s why I’ve decided to share some juicy little insider secrets 🤫 on how to really make money through your travel content.
But first, an announcement 👇
I’m so excited to share that I have teamed up with TreeSisters as one of their SoulTree reforestation partners 🌲🌲🌲. I was looking for a program to donate a percentage of my income to and I selected this program as a way to give back to Mother Earth. As travelers, I think it’s vital that we contribute to the sustainability of our world 🌍 in some form or another.
So, what does this mean for you?
Well, I will be funding the planting of 1 🌲 for every new member who joins the Wildly Successful Travelpreneurs membership PLUS each month, I’ll fund the planting of 1 🌲 for every active paying member in the membership. So, you get to contribute to reforestation not only when you join but each month you’re in the WST membership!
Okay, now on to the reason why you opened this email 😉
I talk a lot about making money as a travel creator through monetizing your blog, paid sponsorships, selling your photography, or writing for magazines that pay their writers.
Well, there is another way. And it is generally one of the highest paying options for travel creators. Personally, a large percentage of my income comes from this type of work.
What the heck am I talking about?
Content marketing or copywriting in the travel niche!
Now there are those who would say that writing blog posts for airlines, designing brochures for travel agencies, or writing website copy for hotels isn’t really travel writing. There’s a bit of stigma around it too like you’re “selling out” unless you solely write long-form narrative pieces about your travel experiences for Nat Geo Travel.
I get it - it’s not what most of us imagine when we think of our travel writing lives.
But the truth is, it’s just another way to diversify your income. You’re not just a travel blogger/writer, you’re a business owner/entrepreneur. Freelancing is another way that you can earn an income through the travel content you create. It’s another stream of income you can add to the others I mentioned above.
Here are some of the commercial travel writing jobs I do:
Writing blog posts and travel guides for an international airline (about a country I’ve never visited).
Writing website copy and email blasts for a luxury yacht rental company in Miami.
Writing thought leadership articles about affordable private jet travel via shared charters.
Writing articles about destination weddings and honeymoons for an international wedding planning website
These are just a few of the jobs I’m doing or have done in the past to give you an idea of how versatile this work is and how many different companies actually need proficient travel writers to craft their content.
One of the best things about content marketing or copywriting is that you usually work directly with the client (or through an agency) and can essentially set your own rates. The travel guides I write for the airline is one of my highest paying gigs because I ghostwrite for them so they pay me more than usual.
Another plus is that you don’t really need to pitch to secure this type of job. You’re likely to get assigned work via an agency or if you can make contact with potential clients directly. And once you start writing for a company, you’re likely to get regular work from them. So, this is ideal if you detest pitching.
Finally, it’s quite common for you to write about destinations you’ve never visited which means it requires a lot of research. This, in turn, helps you discover lots of interesting information about unknown places that you can then pitch to editors for a story. Once you secure that commission, you can then plan a visit and more easily secure sponsorships.
Regardless of your thoughts about this type of travel writing, it has its benefits.
Next week, I’ll share some tips on how to find this type of travel writing work!
