Hey there, travelpreneur!
I’ve been commissioned to write an editorial feature about luxury wine farm properties which means that my travels in July and August will be centered around the Cape Winelands. If you want to see more of this popular part of South Africa, follow me on Instagram, check out this Reel and watch my Story highlights for Cape Winelands.
Now, let’s continue with our series on the psychology of pitching!
So, last week we discussed the psychology of your initial pitch and how the words and phrases you use are important to get recipients to open your email, read it, and actually respond. In other words, understanding the psychology of the representative of the brand you want to partner with.
Well, this week I want to share with you another aspect of psychology when it comes to pitching. Your psychological state when sending a pitch.
The way you approach your pitch is important. Your energy, intention, and mindset when pitching matter. A lot. More than you think. Much more than you'd expect.
Here’s what I mean:
If you’re pitching a travel brand simply to score something “free,” this will come across in your pitch. You won’t focus on how the collaboration will benefit your partner and you also won’t be able to convey the value of what you have to offer because you’re not approaching it as a mutually-beneficial partnership.
Your pitch won’t be favorably received, you won’t get replies or your request will be declined, and rightly so.
However, if you’re pitching a travel brand because you truly want to provide them with a valuable service that will be beneficial to them, it becomes a lot easier to communicate your worth.
When your intention is to be of service and you’re really invested in the success of the brand you wish to work with, you’ll feel more confident when pitching. With this mindset, you know that your offer is sincere and that you can provide something of value that the brand needs. This, in turn, will boost your energy when pitching because you’re reaching out about something that will be beneficial for both parties.
If you want your pitch to be successful, it’s essential to approach it with the right intention. Remember that you’re not asking for something for free, but rather providing an opportunity for a value exchange where both parties provide something of equal value in order for each to accomplish a specific goal.
I’ve worked with many travel writers/bloggers over the years, and I know for a fact that most people have never thought of it in this way. But it’s an essential aspect to understand if you wish to work with travel brands.
Next week, I’ll share a crucial step to pitching success and also how to navigate the negotiation phase like a pro.
For now, let’s move on to…
