Hey there, travelpreneur!
I’m going to keep things short again this week because I’m off to Cape Town today.
We’re going to apply for our Schengen visas which require about a whole tree's worth of printed documents for the 3 of us (when are they gonna go digital and help save the earth?!).
I’m also partnering with one of my favorite local travel brands who is sponsoring our stay and meals. I can’t wait to sit on our balcony basking in the view of Table Mountain or to take our baby boy back to the Two Oceans Aquarium again.
We took him when he was about 4 months and he loved it but I think now that he’s a toddler and more aware of his surroundings, it’s going to blow his mind. I was also struggling with my mental health at the time (post-partum depression), so didn’t fully appreciate or enjoy the trip.
But now as I come down from a super successful introductory launch of The Pitch Vault and have made more space and time for health, wellness, and spiritual practices, I’m ready and excited to explore again.
Your mindset about things can really have a huge impact on your experience, right?
That applies to pitching too, which leads me to this week’s tip…
Post Pandemic Pitching Tip #4 (PPPT#4)
I’ve been fortunate enough to secure numerous complimentary stays and paid partnerships with hotels around the world.
But here’s a tip that I wish I had known earlier on in my career - nurture your relationships with the contacts you make while pitching!
When reaching out to hotels or brands, it’s important to come across as a professional who has their best interests in mind.
Not only will this increase your chances of securing partnerships, but it’ll also ensure that you’re able to reach out to those contacts in the future for more opportunities.
Let me give you an example - when I was pitching hotels in Ljubljana for this summer trip, one person responded that he represents three hotels in Slovenia and would love for me to visit all of them. Although I already had one partnership secured in Slovenia and limited time, I thanked him kindly and explained my situation. I made sure to compliment his properties and kept the conversation open for future collaborations.
Fast forward a few weeks, my parents chose to join us for that portion of our trip and we decided to extend our stay in Slovenia.
I remembered my contact who represented the three hotels and reached out to him again, asking if he’d be interested in having me stay and write about one of his other properties.
To my delight, he replied within two minutes accepting the offer!
Nurturing your relationships with all contacts, even if you can’t collaborate with them at the moment, can open up opportunities in the future.
So, don’t burn any bridges, and always keep the conversation going.
You never know where it might lead you!
This situation is just one example of how focusing on relationships first and sponsorships second has paid off for me in the long run; especially when it comes to PR agents - but that's a tip for another day.
