Hey there, you wildly successful travelpreneur!
I’m back at home and dropping into your inbox again each Tuesday with all the latest opportunities for travel writers/bloggers/freelancers/digital nomads aka travelpreneurs.
We recently returned from our first international trip with our baby boy and although we had an amazing experience (most of the time), traveling with an infant is a whole other ball game.
Not only did all 3 of us get sick with a nasty throat infection during our trip but Kai was so sick on one day with a fever that just wouldn’t break and vomiting that we had to get the hotel to call in a pediatrician.
Now, in most places that wouldn’t be a problem but on an island like Mauritius it gets a bit complicated. Especially since the resort we were staying at was in a rather remote part of the island and the closest pediatrician was a 2-hour drive away and only ended up seeing us at 7:30 that night.
Let’s just say that this mama was stressed out and once the infection inevitably reached me the next day, I was super sick and am still not 100% over a week later.
But besides this, all-in-all we had a wonderful family vacation, worked with some incredible hospitality brands, and figured out some of the kinks you’d expect when traveling long-distance with an infant for the first time.
It was a very good reminder that travel never goes the way we expect (even a luxury-orientated trip) and that the point of traveling is for us to get out of our comfort zone, face our fears, deal with anxieties, rely on the kindness of strangers, and ultimately become a better version of ourselves.
If you’re also planning to travel with an infant or young children soon, here are some things I learned on this trip:
Prepare as much as you can but sometimes you just need to go with the flow.
Pack everything you think you need for the baby and then remove at least a quarter of it (trust me, we lugged a beach tent and clip-on chair around for no good reason).
Get good travel insurance for peace of mind or things can get costly.
Medical workers in third-world countries may not have specialized equipment but that makes them thorough - the pediatrician who tended to Kai in Mauritius was excellent!
Book child-friendly accommodation with good ratings. We were staying at Heritage Le Telfair when Kai got sick and I’m so grateful for all the care and special attention we got from the staff during that time.
Babies and children are more adaptable than we think. Even though we had one really rough day, Kai was a pleasure to travel with and a total champ on our flights (other passengers and flight attendants even commented on what a good baby he was).
Traveling with kids is difficult and requires some practice but is definitely worth it!
Talking about interesting travel experiences…
I wanted to take a moment to congratulate 2 of my friends who also happen to be Pitch to Travel students and Wildly Successful Travelpreneurs members for an exciting accomplishment - becoming published authors!
Nizie and Kristin both contributed chapters to a multi-author book on transformational travel stories titled Book the Flight Already!
