Hey travelpreneur!
So, this newsletter is coming at you a little bit later than usual again.
Unfortunately, we are still dealing with load shedding (scheduled daily power cuts) here in South Africa so I have to plan things carefully and prioritize my client work.
Anyway, this week I wanted to share a few final pointers on how you can get started as a travel content marketing or copywriter…
Tip #1 - Refine your niche
As with travel blogging, it’s important to have a niche. Becoming an expert on a specific subset of the travel niche makes you the go-to person for that topic and it may even bring travel writing work to you. Besides that, it also makes it easier to pitch yourself to brands and agencies. You can explain why you’re the best person for the job (e.g. your niche or expertise matches their target audience) and you can back it up with a portfolio of relevant clips. This makes it much easier for your to identify potential clients as their brand will be aligned with your niche.
Tip #2 - Know what type of content you want to create
Not everyone is suited to copywriting or direct response email marketing campaigns but there are tons of other content you can create for travel brands:
Blog posts
Thought leadership articles
Guest posts to be published on other blogs
Social media captions
Product descriptions
Brochure copy
eBooks
White papers
Newsletter content
Decide what kind of content you’re comfortable creating and then market yourself as an expert in that type of content for your particular niche.
Tip #3 - Reach out to content marketing agencies
There are thousands of content marketing agencies across the world and many of them have travel, tourism, or hospitality clients such as airlines, hotels, tour operators, tourism boards, and more. A great way to start working with them is via an agency. Search for “travel content marketing agency + Cape Town” to find ones to reach out to. You can contact local agencies or even agencies in other parts of the world as you'll be working remotely.
Once you’ve refined your niche, determined what type of content to specialize in, and found some brands or content agencies to reach out to, it’s time to send your LOI. Just like when you send a pitch, it’s important to find the right person to contact (a decision-maker) and address them by name in your email. And don’t forget to follow up if you don’t get a reply within a week!
Hit reply and let me know if the topic series for October has convinced you to delve into freelance content marketing writing or copywriting in the travel industry.
