I’m going to keep it short this week because I have a ton of client work to do this week! Plus, I signed up for an 🦄 un-boring group business coaching program* last week (the biggest investment I’ve made in my biz - ever 🙀) and I’m dying to dig further into the amazing content!
So, without more ramblings from me, let’s dive 🤿 into the good stuff:
Last week, I introduced you to another possible stream of income for travel creators: freelance content marketing/copywriting.
Now, you may be excited to get started with this type of work. I mean who doesn’t want to be paid to write travel content, right? But you may also be wondering how you go about finding high-paying content writing gigs in the travel niche…
Although we’ll get into the nitty gritty of which companies hire freelance travel writers for this type of work and how to approach them next week, I wanted to give you some practical starting points today.
Here are some useful tips to start the process of finding travel writing gigs right now:
Network - this is one of the best ways to find out about content marketing or copywriting gigs within a rather competitive niche such as travel. Inform other travel writers, editors you’ve worked with, or brands you’ve collaborated with that you’re branching out into commercial travel writing. This will keep you top of mind if they need travel content or hear of an opportunity via their network. Travel conferences are also a great place for networking.
Update your portfolio - Add content marketing or copywriting examples to your portfolio (even if it is in a different niche). Wherever you keep your portfolio of writing samples make sure that it is a mix of both editorial content and commercial writing.
Reach out to brands - If you have worked with a brand in the past or have direct contact, reach out to them to let them know that you’re now accepting content marketing/copywriting clients. Securing work from a company that already knows the quality of writing is simpler than convincing companies that don’t know you of your value.
Look for opportunities - Spend time looking for opportunities on places such as LinkedIn (search “travel copywriter”) or relevant Facebook Groups. You’ll be surprised at how many opportunities pop up once you start actively looking.
Sign up for newsletters - There are tons of newsletters that share job postings and opportunities for freelancers. They may not all be aimed at the travel niche like this newsletter is but you may just find a gem between the rest. Check out Journo Resources or Freelance Writing Jobs.
